Girl Up Career Interview: Adwoa Ayesu by Jessyca Hernandez

Adwoa Ayesu is a graduate from Stony Brook university which I’ve had the opportunity and privilege to interview about her career. She has shared her experiences and has given recommendations to those who would like to take a similar career path. She has specialized in Digital Marketing, which is a fairly new thing, and has learned how to handle it along the way.

Tell us about how and why you entered your career?

First she really started with internships because she’s interested in social media and is passionate about it. Being passionate about learning how companies grow and help them manage their social media made her stand out to gain a great job.

What skills have you found vital to your job?

Time management is a good skill when it comes to handling platforms on social media. Good with communication, you need to reach out to your audience and bring in more people to see your companies. When reaching out to your audience, be creative, you can imagine advertisements for companies, but with competition you need to stand above the rest to gain more views. And be good with numbers, you need to analyze the numbers and make conclusions based on your data, see how many are interacting with your posts and based on what type of media they interact with more, make adjustments to attract more views.

What is your favorite part about your career (current or past)

Flexibility in the schedule you have because you have the opportunity to work from home since her job is virtual.

Was there a career setback you faced which you later realized was an advantage?

Not immediately getting a job helped to force Adwoaa get internships in things she would like to do a career in and keep researching on that certain career. She had the opportunity to explore careers she was passionate about and decide what was the right choice for her. Some people who immediately go into a job and find out they don’t want to work there either stay and just work for money, or step back and re-start to look for another job or this time try to for internships.

What is some advice you would offer to someone who is interested in your work?

Digital marketing is a fairly new career so it would be best to major in communication, or marketing. It would be best to do internships and some you do virtually to see if you would like to major in it.

What should they major in?

Marketing or Communication

What happens to a company when something like the ban of an app, for example Tik Tok, happens? Who does it affect and what do you do?

Well because Tik Tok was a fairly new app, a lot of companies did not develop a big audience in that app. So a lot of companies did not rely on a platform like Tik Tok. All social medias have a chance of blowing up and then shutting down like Vine. That is why it is best to have companies use several platforms to build up an audience and not just rely on one platform. It would affect people who solely relied on one social media platform to bring them views or income, like influencers.
