What led to your decision to attend college in Hamilton, NY at a liberal arts institution like Colgate University?
I wanted a school where I could shape my education to fit my interests. Colgate stood out for its small, focused classes, which gave me the academic experience I was looking for. Though I was initially unsure about the remote location, I grew to appreciate the sense of community that comes with a close-knit campus. The seclusion actually enhances student life, creating a strong bond among classmates and providing a unique environment for personal and academic growth.
Can you describe what kind of support/communities exist for minority students at Colgate University?
The best way to connect with specific communities at Colgate is by joining clubs. We have a wide variety of cultural organizations that support all the identities of all students. The great thing is, there’s always something for everyone—you just need to explore! For students from minority backgrounds, there are dedicated spaces where we’re encouraged to express and celebrate our cultures. The ALANA Cultural Center was a key part of my freshman year, serving as a hub where I could attend various club meetings and build connections with other students of color.
In what ways can a student of color find her niche at Colgate University? Feel supported?
I always encourage new students to try as many new things as possible when they first arrive on campus. Those first two weeks of freshman year are crucial, and being open to new experiences (within reason) can set the tone for the rest of your college journey. We also have a mentorship program that connects upperclassmen with new students, offering guidance as they navigate their first two years at Colgate. This support system helps new students adjust both academically and socially, making the transition into college life smoother.
What advice do you have for Juniors and Seniors in high school who want to attendColgate University and…
… are nervous about the location?
Every school has its pros and cons when it comes to location, but my advice is not to let this be a deciding factor. I firmly believe in making the most of any experience, and the ability to adapt is one of the most valuable qualities you can have. Embrace the environment, and you'll find opportunities for growth wherever you are.
…have questions about financial aid?
Colgate University is committed to making education accessible and offers a need-based financial aid policy. This means that financial aid is awarded based on a student's demonstrated financial need, rather than academic or athletic achievements. Colgate meets 100% of demonstrated need for all admitted students, which is determined through a thorough review of a family's financial situation. Check out the Colgate University website for more information!
… want their application to stand out?
Be yourself! Colgate is looking for well-rounded students, but most importantly, they want to see genuine passion in everything you do. Show your enthusiasm and commitment, and don’t be afraid to highlight what makes you unique.
What are some of Colgate University’s most notable programs?
Colgate has a strong NCAA Division I athletics program, offering opportunities for both varsity and club sports. If you’re interested in pursuing athletics at the collegiate level, Colgate provides an environment that supports student-athletes in balancing their academic and athletic commitments.
What advice would you offer a student who is considering attending Colgate University, but is on the fence about it?
Ultimately, it all depends on where you envision yourself in four years. If you want to be challenged academically, create lifelong connections, and embark on a (crazy) self-discovery journey, the Colgate is the perfect place for YOU! College is whatever you make it out to be, and I believe that Colgate University is where students can reach their fullest potential as lovers of knowledge.
