Evaluation of variability in the concentration of amikacin in serum, synovial fluid, and bone tissue of horses following intravenous administration of amikacin sulphate. Mean +/- SD amikacin concentrations in synovial fluid and bone tissues were 30.2 +/- 7.3 and 5.6 +/- 1.6 microg/ml, respectively, at 2 hours after administration of amikacin. The mean +/- SD amikacin concentration in serum was 11.8 +/- 4.5 microg/ml at 2 hours after administration of amikacin. Amikacin concentrations were detectable in synovial fluid for the duration of the study. Synovial fluid concentrations were consistent with the expected distribution of amikacin into joint fluid. Amikacin concentrations in bone tissue and serum samples were below the limit of detection of the assay.
